VOL III. Lookbook

A.I. Anacaona Intelligence is the third capsule from Humanity in the Digital Age. The collection’s name Anacaona Intelligence plays with the term A.I. Artificial Intelligence. - the intention is to juxtapose what is digital and what is artisanal. I have always been really fascinated with innovation and technology. The collection is inspired by the Taino Indian tribe native to the Dominican Republic, my home country. Anacaona was the most beautiful queen of the Tainos; her name means golden flower. Through this collection I search for my perception of what it means to have Taino heritage in our ancestry, though we might not be blood descendants of these Indians and they have long since died out, we still use many of their traditions and have passed on many of their practices in our modern day.  The collection is my perception of what it means to have this heritage in a modern context. 

Modernity has led us to mostly interact through our screens. I feel there is a general nostalgia for what you can touch. I really wanted to portray visually what that felt like to me.  A society that works through technology but that is human and organic. We crave to touch, to see how things are made, and most of all our humanity. 

The collection juxtaposes artisanal handicraft vs. digital technology. It views technology through a functional manual touch aesthetic. The meaning of this study is to show a closer look behind technology usually seen as abstract-- to show the process behind its nuts and bolts behind software and hardware. Throughout our pieces, we show circuits and microchips woven in our textiles by hand. Contrastingly, I developed toile prints from historical wood engravings and manipulated them to show glitches making them look futuristic —without losing the collection’s tactile feeling.

A.I. as a collection plays with traditional sartorial and haute couture garments making them more modern and easy to wear through mixing them with streetwear aesthetic. Most of all the collection has the easy Caribbean way of life brought to modern day.
